in the light of winter's air;
heeeere are film photos I took during my trip to Prague and four-cities-in-Poland! cross-processed, hence the bizarre colours. which I quite like actually, even if there's just a bit too much green. because there is blue and I like blue in my photos. uhm, I used sensia 400 film because it was the cheapest colour slide film I could find on ebay. and some of them turned out underexposed even though I tried only to take photos in good light because well, you don't really get good light in winter unless you're lucky. this film thing is all really quite fun 8D it's SO different from digital camera shooting because you only get about 36 shots per roll so each shot has to count. and I dunno, I want to try more! maybe one day when the lighting isn't so bad and the roads aren't so icy (I keep having heart attacks every time I walk slip now), I'll just shoot random things in London. because my next holiday will be quite some time away. this was in Krakow, just before the rather stunning Wawel Castle which I somehow have no film photos of.

AUGH. I BLAME HARRY POTTER FOR THIS. I pick up like ALL my words from reading them and guessing their usage in that context auuuugh cry stupid char. |

isn't it wonderful-- the cold wind and spring in the heart inexplicable.
I'm just standing by my window now watching the snow fall steadily outside on the quiet night street and covering the trees and playground and pavement and cars. it's so beautiful illuminated by the streetlights. I'm so lucky to be in a country where it snows. and no, I don't think I will ever grow sick of it (except when it turns to slush) because even when cold it's beautiful. are there any words for this beauty? Was I really seeking good or just seeking attention? this article: 'heroes and sociopaths: cut from the same cloth?" there's another article linked to it titled "addicted to being good? the psychology of heroism". SO ANYWAY YEAH I'm too lazy to make any intelligent comments right now but isn't it an interesting idea?! it got linked to jekyll & hyde, but what I was really thinking of was batman & the joker. specifically, I don't know where this exact line of thought came from, was it the dark knight? but there was someone who questioned if batman was like that because gotham was so screwed up and psychopathic (all the villains there are seriously unnatural and creepy man), or was gotham so screwed up because of batman? were the villains a response to batman's costumed crimefighting/'grandstanding'? how different is batman from the joker anyway? yeahhhh I know I lost my main point there somewhere. but. in this nature show that rages every day; it was anything but hear the voice anything but hear the voice it was anything but hear the voice that says that we're all basically alone.
*
it was then he heard his intuition say:
we were all basically alone and despite what all his studies had shown that what's mistaken for closeness is just a case of mitosisI do like this song very much. just obtained Armchair Apocrypha, and that's undoubtedly the album of Andrew Bird's I like best so far, more than Noble Beast. The Supine is a lovely soundscape that is, I suspect, a variation of what he played as his opening act when he came to London in November, and I just really like Scythian Empire because yay historical references and it was a kickass closing act as well. hee. okay so maybe I'm already biased, but yeah this is a good album. old teenage hopes are alive at your door / left you with nothing but they want some more;
nghhhhhhhhhh okay so I was rereading New X-Men as canon review for the Stepford Cuckoos so of course I have to go through Scott cheating on Jean with Emma even though I did my best to skip it and I caught that panel where they're kissing on the astral plane and NNNNGHHHH I JUST REALLY HATE SCOTT/EMMA OKAY HATE HATE HATE HATE HISS SPIT RANT rant rant rant stalking around the house audibly ranting to myself but anyway, NXM #150 is titled Phoenix Invictus which is lovely. here is the Invictus poem: Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. |

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
anyway. on a whim I logged into my tumblr account, which I haven't logged into for months, and had a splendid time clicking through a few pages worth of lyrics, poetry and pretty reposted pictures of gorgeous things. I do love tumblr, it's a wonderful way to collect things that ping me hard, things that are really really me. there's so much beauty collected in there in so many different forms. HAVE THIS:  thqwee. a hundred million suns and stars;
I have been meaning to make this post forever but I just got this scan: this is an acanti. it is a space whale in the Marvelverse. this is the page/panel I read six-and-more years ago that made me choose this username, haha. I just liked it, okay, the concepts and words used in combination with each other. there's soaring, interstellar, song, tachyons, cosmos, aria, creation...ANYWAY. ( it is actually exceedingly ugly. )yes, melissa. it is a space whale. 8D write-up here. Current Mood: amused |

but all good people have a sense of themselves;
my year in review: 2009: properly started travelling. went to greece, romania, spain, belgium, italy, the czech republic and poland in that order. experienced the kindness of strangers, learned never to take visas for granted. easily the greatest adventure of my life. (You know, this is really strange because I now divide my years by the academic system, so my years kind of start in late September and end about the same time. the year's barely beginning for me, what do you mean it's over?! but I digress.) in terms of fandom, because clearly that's an important part of my life too: started LJ fandom-RPing after four years, it's great and mad fun. I properly discovered indie music this year too, and loved it loads. A few months ago I would've said Fleet Foxes were my best musical find, and they are in terms of technique and technicality, but then I discovered The Antlers and their Hospice album in all its raw, emotional glory so now I can't decide. I have a softer spot for The Antlers, I think. And a few weeks ago I would've said Darker Than Black was the best show I found last year, but then I found Battlestar Galactica which, remarkably, beat it hands down. spent this entire year recharging, really, and strengthening my sense of self; my interests, personality, everything. so basically I mostly spent 2009 building my little worlds right up right up. I don't know when I'll ever have so much time for myself again ever in my life, so even though it felt like I was going nowhere in 2009 (maybe backwards but deeper), I do appreciate it. and because, for all my talk of appreciating nuances and don't simplify things that are complex and don't complicate things that are simple, I still like summing things up briefly: I cannot decide which song, or which few songs, or which few song lyrics sum up my year. I'm still thinking about it. |

you keep trying to be / try harder, maybe this is not your year;
so, before I forget. crossing the new year was UTTERLY AWESOME seriously. embryophyte and I went to Waterloo Bridge just before 9pm and ended up standing there for three hours waiting for the clock to chime midnight. by 10.30pm it was massively crowded, you couldn't even move an inch in whatever position you were in on the bridge. there was BBC radio music playing, and it was awesome fun. ( HOPPIPOLLA played. I can't tell you how happy I was that it did.) everyone counting down really loudly from 10 seconds downwards was fun. Big Ben chiming in the visible distance was lovely. as many people who had them as possible cracked crackers. and the fireworks display started, oh the fireworks display ♥ and singing auld lang syne as a giant crowd, eeee. the best part. right as we were dispersing just after midnight, IT STARTED SNOWING. IT STARTED SNOWING. nice, great thick flurries of snow! then it stopped about five minutes after, so I still don't know if I was imagining things but everyone else imagined it with me too, then. most magical snow I've ever experienced. I was grinning so terribly fiercely and so drunk on delight. so this is what I miss in London when I go back home for Christmas. massive boxing day sales (best shopping I've ever experienced in my life), and an utterly kickass New Year's Countdown. nothing could ever beat either of those, imho. then we headed to a friend's house party and yeah, I just got back. it was massive fun, much more fun than I'd ever expected. a wonderful end to a mediocre year, and a horrid day. the other side of the world;
see this is why I should really keep up with real world news as well as I keep up with fandom and RP news. former Indonesian president Abdulrrahman Wahid i.e. Gus Dur died yesterday, and I took one day to find out? Normally this would be all over the news by now, but since I am removed from my region and not-subscribed to any regular news feeds, I am more or less reliant on random social feeds and other more current affairs-aware friends to mention it. also yes I know my scholarship comes from a media organisation, but for my batch of scholars they seem to have messed up and not given us free access to their online news like they should. maybe I should look into that. know me and name me;
I kind of wish Marvel picked their characters' names more carefully; in addition to my two name-related rants that Psylocke should always have been codenamed Psyche and maybe the Cuckoos should've been better named, I now think Sage should really have been named Sophia instead of Tessa. even if I think Tessa is the better sounding name. and even if Sophia isn't really a name you'd give to someone who grew up in the Balkans. BECAUSE. Sophia means wisdom in Greek (Tessa just means summer, or harvest). but even better, the Greek root word of the name Sophia, sophos, is used in classical philosophy by Plato to demarcate a SAGE. as in, distinct from a philosopher. see, here! which would be terribly clever. but then again I guess they couldn't really have done it because Tessa-as-Sage was a huge retcon anyway and Tessa was introduced wayyy before she became Sage-the-X-Man so they couldn't have alluded to this whole sage and wisdom and knowledge thing.
